Mr Simon Thomas is a Consultant Paediatric Orthopaedic Surgeon at the Bristol Royal Children's Hospital and the Royal United Hospital, Bath which positions he has held since late 2007. His main clinical interests are developmental hip dysplasia, skeletal dysplasia, limb deformity and sports injuries in children. His major research interest is the use of systemic and intraosseus bisphosphonate for avascular necrosis of the femoral head in children and adolescents. He is well published in the long term follow-up of developmental hip dysplasia. He is on the teaching faculties for Current Concepts in Paediatric Orthopaedics (British Society of Children’s Orthoapedic Surgeons) and the precourse meeting of the European Paediatric Orthopaedic Society.
Mr Thomas graduated in Medicine in 1992 from the University of the Cambridge and did clinical training at Barts, qualifying in 1995. He specialised in Orthopaedic Surgery in Oxford (2000-2005). In 2005/6 he undertook 12 months advanced clinical training at the Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto. He has undertaken further fellowship training in Oxford (limb reconstruction) and Perth, Australia (adolescent sports medicine).
Outside of his professional commitments Mr Thomas has a wife, who is a GP, and 3 young children. He enjoys endurance cycling, having twice completed an amateur race Pyrennean stage of the Tour de France (Etape du Tour 2003 and 2007). He also enjoys dinghy racing with his wife, recently winning the fast handicap division at Fowey Royal Regatta 2009. In years past he has been a succesful rower, competeing at Henley Royal Regatta, and yacht racer, skippering succesful boats in Cowes and Windsor Cup regattas.
