Background Information
Professional profile:
James Murray started practice as an orthopaedic consultant in Bristol in 2007. His elective NHS practice is based at The Avon Orthopaedic Centre, Southmead and trauma at Frenchay Hospital, where he is Trauma Director. James is the clinical audit lead for orthopaedics at the Avon Orthopaedic Centre.

James trained in Cambridge, underwent basic surgical training in Oxford and then worked in knee and hip research in Newcastle, before entering orthopaedic specialist training in The Wessex Deanery. In 2006 he spent a Fellowship year in Sydney, Australia at the internationally renowned Australian Institute of Musculoskeletal Surgery, under the supervision of Merv Cross. He gained valuable experience in sports injuries and joint replacement surgery.

James was awarded the British Association of Surgery for the Knee travelling fellowship in 2006 and the EndoPlus Knee Prize in 2005.

James has a keen research and training interest, with numerous published peer-reviewed papers and his first book, A to Z of Musculoskeletal and Trauma Radiology, published in June 2008. James reviews for the journal Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research. James is part of the Bristol Knee Group who undertake research and teaching in knee surgery in both the national and internation arena.

His clinical research and training have enabled him to offer a full knee service in both the public and private sectors. James focuses on early post-operative mobility using techniques such as minimally-invasive muscle-sparing joint replacement and day-case ligament reconstruction.
Personal profile:
From early childhood James has been passionate about building and re-building and this developed through his surgical training into a desire to reconstruct even the most complex of knees from patients with degenerative disease or from patients unfortunate enough to need a revision after their first or even second knee replacement.

James has a keen sporting interest, previously playing competitive squash, athletics and rugby, but now more as a spectator and recreational skier! Musically James is a keen pianist, from Blues to Classical, and enjoys the Bristol live music scene.

He is married to a local GP and together they have three children.
