Background Information 
Professional profile:
Mr Porteous specialises in all aspects of knee surgery and his practice only sees patients with knee problems. He runs the Knee Injury Service at Frenchay Hospital and provides a similar service in his private practice. A full range of options for patients with cartilage problems is provided, including cartilage regeneration and transplant techniques and re-aligning osteotomies. Half (Unicompartmental) and total knee replacements are available for the treatment of advanced arthritis.

Mr Porteous leads the revision knee replacement service for North Bristol NHS Trust and complex knee replacement and revision knee replacements are also available in his private practice.

Mr Porteous receives a high proportion of referrals for complex knee problems from Cheltenham, Bath, Yeovil, Taunton, Weston and South Wales.

Mr Porteous trained in orthopaedics in Bristol before gaining additional experience in knee surgery in Australia, the USA, Canada and Scandanavia.

He maintains an active interest in all areas of knee research and education and developed the knee replacement education classes at the Avon Orthopaedic Centre. He is the advisor on knee problems and pathways to the Bristol PCT MATS and South Gloucestershire PCT CATS programmes. He is former recipient of the British Knee Society Travelling Fellowship and the Knee Society President's Medal. He advises on knee replacement and knee technologies to the Medicine Devices Agency and NICE.
