The knee and surgical education
Having graduated from Newcastle University in 1981 Mr Gregory remained in the North East, undertaking first his basic Surgical training and subsequently his Orthopaedic and Trauma training, before spending a year in Adelaide, South Australia where he gained experience in knee ligament reconstruction surgery. Mr Gregory returned to the UK in 1993 to take up a consultant post in Durham where he has since remained. Mr Gregory’s elective practice initially comprised general orthopaedics with an interest in soft-tissue knee surgery and whilst this has subsequently developed almost exclusively to knee surgery of all types, he continues to have a general trauma interest.
Mr Gregory has, since 2005, been Lead Clinician in Trauma & Orthopaedics at County Durham and Darlington NHS Trust. He has had an interest in Surgical Education and is currently Chair of the Specialist Training Committee for Trauma & Orthopaedics and is Quality Management Lead in the School of Surgery in the Northern deanery. He is an examiner at MRCS level and is Regional Specialty College Adviser in Trauma and Orthopaedics.
Mr Gregory’s sporting interests outside medicine include skiing, mountaineering, running and occasionally golf. He has an interest in history, art and travel, is an avid reader of both fiction and non-fiction and is an enthusiastic cook – though more in the style of Keith Floyd than Heston Blumenthal!
