Mr Mahawar is a consultant general, upper gastrointestinal and bariatric surgeon and has recently joined City Hospitals Sunderland NHS Trust. Following his MBBS from Calcutta Medical College, in India in 1996, Mr Mahawar has had a surgical training career spanning more than 14 years in some of the finest institutions of the world, covering a wide variety of general surgical procedures. Mr Mahawar is the first trainee in Northern Deanery to have undergone a formal structured training in bariatric surgery including two years with the Bariatric Unit at Sunderland Royal Hospital and six months with North Tyneside General Hospital Unit. Mr Mahawar's experience of hundreds of bariatric procedures has been further enriched by overseas courses with Prof. Lonroth in Gothenburg, Sweden and with Prof. Prager in Vienna. Mr Mahawar has been a regular faculty member at the Laparoscopic gastric banding course at Sunderland and NUGITS and is very keen on academic and training aspects og bariatric surgery. Mr Mahawar has been rather fortunate with many posters and oral presentations in various national and international bariatric conferences.Obesity and metabolic surgery is his special interest but Mr Mahawar also carries out laparoscopic gall bladder surgery, laparoscopic hernia repair, laparoscopic anti reflux surgery, and a variety of other surgical and endoscopic procedures.Mr Mahawar is passionate about developing newer models of publishing in biomedical literature to improve scientific communication and facilitate education and training.
Mr Mahawar came to Britian from India in 2003 and has been in the North East since 2004. Newcastle is now his home where he lives with his wife (who is a software engineer and works on Oracle databases) and son. Mr Mahawar has a keen interest in how biomedical literature is published and disseminated. Mr Mahawar follows British politics very closely and in his own words is largely impressed by the honesty and integrity of politicians here.
