Mr Gordon MacLellan is a fully private consultant orthopaedic surgeon at Spire Hartswood hospital in Brentwood, Essex, offering private foot and ankle surgery, orthopaedic treatment for children and general orthopaedic surgery in our clean and comfortable private hospital.
Mr MacLellan graduated from St. George’s Hospital, London in 1969 and completed his general surgical training at St. Mary’s Hospital, London. His specialist orthopaedic training took place at Northwick Park and the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital in London and at Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, USA.
Mr MacLellan was a pioneer in promoting home rehabilitation for patients following hip fracture and joint replacement surgery. This is now a 'gold standard' across the UK. Home rehabilitation reduces complications and length of time in hospital. Hip replacement patients can expect to be in hospital for up to five days and to be walking well, without aids, in six weeks. This may also include a gentle round of golf! Driving may not be possible until six weeks and patients must confirm cover with their motor insurer if they wish to drive sooner.
Mr MacLellan's research in lower limb mechanics has led to non-surgical treatments for Achilles tendon problems, heel pain and stress injuries in athletes, dancers and military recruits. Non-surgical treatment for achilles tendon problems and heel pain may include physiotherary using ultrasound or laser, massage, eccentric muscle and tendon strengthening, shock wave therapy and Visco-elastic Shock Attenuation or other bio-mechanical changes in footwear.
After 26 years as a consultant orthopaedic surgeon in Romford I have built an extensive network of support from physiotherapists, technicians and consultant colleauges. This helps me to give individually tailored treatment for the benefit of patients of all ages, both adults and children.
