He returned to UK in 1994 and completed surgical registrar training in the North East Thames region. He trained under the supervision of renowned surgeons such as Professor Avril Mansfield. Lord Ara Darzi, Lord Bernie Ribeiro, Professor Mark Winslett and Professor Brian Davidson. His training gave him valuable experience in laparoscopic, upper and lower gastrointestinal and hepato-biliary and liver transplant surgery.
Farrukh Khan was appointed as a consultant surgeon at Basildon University Hospital in 2000, where he helped build the upper gastrointestinal cancer service and laparoscopic colorectal (bowel) surgery service. As a single-handed upper gastrointestinal and bariatric surgeon in his NHS hospital, he receives patient referrals on a daily basis for specialist management opinion.
Farrukh Khan started performing obesity surgery in 2006 and he has become one of the most experienced gastric band surgeons in Essex, having performed more than 150 gastric band weight loss operations.
Practice philosophy
I have always sought to develop a strong team around my practice as I believe that a team can provide a far better service than an individual. This is the case with the upper gastrointestinal cancer service I established at my NHS hospital and this is what I have developed in my obesity surgery service in the private sector.
I provide treatment to my patients according to their needs and I make myself available to my patients whenever they need me, whether they are my NHS or private patients.
