Spire Wellesley Hospital has a number of senior physiotherapists experienced in the treatment and management of sports injuries. Having an extensive understanding of how the musculoskeletal structure of the body works allows us to treat injuries effectively but also to advise on how to avoid further problems.
The Physiotherapists at Spire Wellesley Hospital will assess the problem fully and give instruction on how to maintain a healthy body for your sport
Sports injuries can be caused by sudden, traumatic forces beyond your control. However they are often the result of repetitive pressures due to poor postural control or imbalances in the muscle groups associated with movement within sport. Sometimes inadequate preparation, inappropriate equipment or incorrect technique will add to the chances of injury. The physiotherapists at Spire Wellesley Hospital will assess the problem fully and give instruction on how to maintain a healthy body for your sport, in addition to using the best equipment to aid healing and testing imbalances in your muscles or balance reactions with specialist equipment.
Some injuries are missed by the sufferer, if caused gradually, as they are often associated with training pains. Left unchecked these will eventually worsen and become harder to resolve. With sudden injuries that are minor and don’t require hospital treatment, the best action is to follow the PRICE protocol:
Protection - supporting the area with suitable strapping
Rest – relative rest from aggravating factors, rather than complete rest
Ice – regular cold therapy for 10-20 minutes every few hours
Compression – tubigrip type bandaging to avoid swelling
Elevation – to avoid gravity increasing swelling
After 2-3 days the symptoms should have partly settled but may then require more specific assessment and treatment from a suitably qualified physiotherapist.
When the injury has resolved enough to allow return to sporting activity, you should have exercises to maintain flexibility, strength, and core muscle stability to help avoid a repetition of the injury.
