Mr Simon Ruben is a consultant ophthalmic surgeon at Spire Hartswood private hospital in Brentwood, Essex and Spire Wellesley Hospital in Southend on Sea, Essex.
Mr Ruben is happy to see the full range of private ophthalmic referrals, although he has a particular interest and experience in cataract and glaucoma surgery and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists and a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons.
At Spire Hartswood Hospital, Mr Ruben uses the Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) imaging for early detection and monitoring of glaucoma and other degenerative eye diseases.
Mr Ruben qualified in 1985 after undertaking his general medical training at St Bartholomew's Hospital in London. He then completed his ophthalmic training at Southampton Eye Hospital, the Western Ophthalmic Hospital London (St Mary's Hospital) and the Birmingham Eye Hospital .
Mr Ruben also worked at Moorfields Eye Hospital where he undertook research into the early detection of glaucoma and completed his fellowship training in glaucoma and gained his MD.
Mr Ruben has performed in the region of 10,000 cataract procedures and has a wealth of surgical experience and expertise in this field including the use of multifocal lenses for spectacle independence and toric lenses for the treatment of astigmatism. He also has a wide experience of more complex cataract cases including trauma and glaucoma.
He is a fellowship trained specialist in glaucoma, keeping up to date with the latest trends in diagnosis and management of this very common condition. He has over 20 years experience in the medical and surgical treatment of glaucoma (both simple and complex cases) and in combined surgery for cataract with glaucoma.
