Mr Sean Symons treats all knee disorders, in particular sports injuries. Where possible this treatment will be done arthroscopically (key-hole surgery), which will reduce your pain and speed your recovery.
Sean Symons has a specialist interest in regenerative medicine within the knee joint. Methods are used to treat isolated cartilage defects using the patient’s own (autologous) bone marrow stem cells and growth factors derived from the patient’s blood (from platelet rich plasma). The stem cells are injected onto a scaffold that is placed into the cartilage defect and held in position using a mixture of a sealant (fibrin glue) and the platelet rich plasma.
Another area of regenerative medicine he specialises in is the use of bio-degradable scaffolds to treat defects in the meniscus (the specialist buffer cartilage of the knee).
Treatment of chronic inflammatory conditions in the soft tissues around the knee. These may be in the body of the tendon or ligament or where the tendon ligament inserts into the bone (enthesopathy). These may be treated by platelet rich plasma injections, which provide vital growth factors that help the repair of these inflamed and damaged tissues.
Other conditions of the knee treated are:
Ligament tears requiring reconstruction
- anterior cruciate ligament (ACL)
- posterior cruciate ligament (PCL)
- medial collateral liagament (MCL)
- lateral collateral ligament (LCL)
- posterolateral corner (PLC)
- partial resection or repair/suture
- artifical scaffold
Patellar stabilisation surgery
- Medial Patellofemoral liagament reconstruction
Sean Symons has extensive experience in all areas of Children's Orthopaedic & Trauma surgery.
