Mr Simon Bailey was appointed to the Maidstone & Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust in April 2006 as a Consultant General, Colorectal and Laparoscopic Surgeon. He graduated from Guys’ and St Thomas’ Hospital in 1995, having gained Batchelor of Science Degree in Basic Medical Sciences and Biochemistry and Honours in Surgery at the final MB examination.
After an initial surgical rotation as an SHO at Guy’s and Thomas’ for four years he was appointed to the South East Thames SpR rotation. He worked at the Kent and Sussex, Maidstone Hospital, Kings College and University Hospital, Lewisham, before embarking on a Master’s degree. After completion of his thesis on “Day Case Doppler Guided Haemorrhoidal Artery Ligation” he gained an inter-deanery transfer to the Wessex region to further his training at the Pelican Centre in Basingstoke. There he worked for Prof. Bill Heald and Mr Myrrdin Rees, receiving specialist tuition in complex pelvic surgery and liver resections.
After passing the third part of FRCS he worked as the Senior Registrar at the Great Western Hospital in Swindon. He then completed a laparoscopic fellowship at The Royal Hampshire County Hospital in Winchester with Mr A Miles and Mr R H S Lane.
Since his appointment, Mr Bailey has overseen the development of laparoscopic colorectal surgery within the Trust. The unit now acts as the tertiary referral unit for complex colorectal surgery in Kent and East Sussex. He has also developed an enhanced recovery after surgery programme that reduces the length of hospital stay and has been recognised nationally.
Mr Bailey’s other areas of special interest include day case haemorrhoidal surgery, including the HALO procedure. He is also interested in the management of early rectal cancers and has introduced Transanal Microscopic Surgery to Kent.
Mr Bailey is currently the Director of Surgery for Maidstone & Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust. He is the Royal College of Surgeons Tutor for Surgery and the Deputy Lead for the Colorectal Multidisciplinary Team.
As well as colorectal surgery, Mr Bailey offers day case minimally invasive hernia surgery, keyhole gallbladder surgery, all forms of endoscopy and surgery for all types of ‘lumps and bumps’.
