Spire Tunbridge Wells Announce Surge in '60s and 70s Surgery for Men and Women'

Spire Tunbridge Wells Hospital is supporting the hospital group’s national statistics, recently released, which shows that over a five-year period there has been a staggering 303% growth in women and 168% growth amongst men in their 60s having cosmetic surgery procedures. The hospital itself has witnessed a 220% growth in cosmetic surgery over a five-year period and supports the national statistics.

Nationally, there has been a 175% increase in men in their 70s and 133% increase in women of the same age group. Cosmetic surgery continues to increase in popularity compared to five years ago, with overall figures growing by 78%. However, the sharp rise in ‘60+ surgery’ indicates that more people — including men - are pursuing surgery as an option to combat ageing. Local Spire Tunbridge Wells consultant plastic surgeon, Brent Tanner, has witnessed that around 58% of his patients are over 60.

Mr. Brent Tanner, Consultant Plastic/Cosmetic Surgeon at Spire Tunbridge Wells Hospital comments:
“Demand for facial surgery amongst the older community is coming from 1) fit ladies who believe their face does not fit the age that they feel; 2) a child’s wedding is coming up and the mother wants to look her best; and 3) grand parents who are self conscious when their young grand children start playing with their wobbly loose necks.

“There is an increasing amount of people having cosmetic surgery during the last five years, so it has never been more important to make sure that the surgeon has the correct qualifications. The top procedure we are experiencing at Spire Tunbridge Wells hospital is facial surgery (eyes, feathered neck, jowls and cheek), which shows its growing popularity amongst people in the surrounding counties. Nationally, there has been a rise in male cosmetic procedures over a five-year period, as well as older people in their 60s and 70s recognising the increasing acceptance of cosmetic surgery. As well as fully-qualified consultants, people should make sure that their cosmetic surgery takes place in a clean, safe facility, with good access to aftercare. There are an increasing number of ‘cowboy’ practices setting up, and with the credit crunch affecting people financially, they may be tempted to save money. However, this is still surgery and the same care and aftercare should be available, regardless of the procedure.”

Other national highlights include:
• Men in their 40s having cosmetic surgery has risen by 69% over five years, and for women in their 40s by 94%
• 18-19 year-old women have seen an increase of 116% in cosmetic procedures over a five year period
• Top five procedures are:
breast augmentation
abdominoplasty (tummy tuck)
breast reduction
blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery)
• Top five procedures for men are:
pinnaplasty (ears pinned back)
rhinoplasty (nose job)
gynaecomastia (male breast reduction)
blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery)
• Nose reshaping surgery has risen by 9% in the past year
