Spire Norwich Hospital retains 5-star hygiene status after an inspection by the Food Standards Agency

03 April 2024

Spire Norwich Hospital are pleased to announce that after a recent inspection of the site’s kitchen, catering facilities, food storage and due diligence documentation, the team received a 5-star hygiene rating, the highest rating given by the Food standards Agency. This fantastic achievement is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the hospital’s catering colleagues who provide an outstanding food service for patients and colleagues alike. The implications of this accomplishment are far-reaching, delivering on the hospital’s promise of a positive impact on patients' well-being and overall hospital experience.

Food hygiene ratings, typically associated with dining establishments, also extends to the healthcare sector, ensuring that the standards of hospital food are of a high level, meeting all the requirements set out by the agency and local authority. A new rating is given each time a facility or establishment is inspected by a food safety officer from their local authority.

Spire Norwich Hospital’s confirmation of its latest hygiene rating is complimentary to the most recent PLACE audit (Patient Led Assessments of the Care Environment) and sees even more of an improvement on already high patient experience food scores. Results were confirmed following the audit in November last year as a score of over 93%.

Lucy Mills, Facilities Manager, said:

“Passing a 5-star Environmental Health Officer's audit is not just about meeting standards, it’s about a commitment to excellence, attention to detail and the dedication of the team to uphold the highest safety and environmental standards. Well done to the Catering Team.”

Ryan Mason, Patient Services and Catering Team Leader, added:

“Patient safety is a priority for our catering department. The team are dedicated in ensuring our high standards are delivered daily. Retaining our 5-star rating shows we are delivering our purpose ‘Making a positive difference to people’s lives, through outstanding personalised care’. Well done to the whole team for their hard work in achieving this fantastic result.”
