Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeon of EdinburghMember of The Association of Breast Surgeons
Oliver Young undertook his undergraduate medical training at the University of Edinburgh qualifying in 1999. During his basic surgical training he also worked in Northampton and Christchurch, New Zealand. His subsequent surgical training was in Edinburgh with placements in both Dundee and Glasgow. He undertook two years of post graduate research at the Edinburgh Breast Unit under the supervision of Professor Mike Dixon. He has been a consultant in the Edinburgh Breast Unit since 2011 where he works with a team of seven other consultants collectively treating over 700 new breast cancers annually. He manages a significant number of new cancers detected via the Scottish Breast Screening Programme. He has a very keen interest in neoadjuvant endocrine therapy and subsequent breast conservation surgery employing both well-established and novel oncoplastic techniques. He works very closely with other disciplines including pathology, radiology, oncology and clinical genetics. He currently chairs the Quality Improvement Team for the breast unit and has a keen interest in the safe streamlining and improvement of patient care pathways.
Oliver Young grew up in London and was educated at Colfe’s School and Epsom College. With a paediatrician and a surgeon as parents and Professors of biochemistry and anatomy as grandfathers, he was destined for a career in medicine. However, before commencing his studies (and since) he spent much time in South West France educating himself on the fineries of peasant life, bad french and the joys of cycling the open road - without performance enhancing drugs. Since graduating he has stayed this side of the border having married Fiona Johnston, a fellow medical student, with whom he has three small children. He just about balances a busy home life with that of a busy breast surgeon.
