Walk this May, talk this May…

09 May 2018

A healthy lifestyle doesn’t necessarily mean hitting the gym every day and always eating chicken and veg! A daily walk can do wonders when aiming towards a healthy lifestyle.

There are multiple benefits to be gained from walking, preventing/managing conditions such as heart disease and high blood pressure, strengthening of bones and muscles and maintaining a healthy weight. Although not expected, many people also benefit psychologically from regular walks.  If you’ve had a busy day at work and need to clear your mind, you regularly feel stressed or suffer with anxiety, walking can be a great coping mechanism to relax your mind.

Exercise doesn’t have to be strenuous, painful and boring to be beneficial! A simple 20-30 minute stroll a day is a great form of exercise to keep your mind and body working well. It is important that your walks are enjoyable; listen to your favourite music or podcast or bring a friend. Integrating walking and your social life is a great way to stay active without missing out on socialising with your friends. Rather than sitting in a coffee shop, why not take a stroll around the park and get your steps in?

Are you an active individual who enjoys regular exercise but you’re limited by ongoing pain? Physiotherapy can make a huge difference to individuals who experience regular pain, it doesn’t always lead to surgery. We have a great team of specialist physiotherapists here at Spire Harpenden Hospital, offering an array of services including hydrotherapy, sports injury treatment and general physiotherapy.

However, if you have tried physiotherapy and you still experience difficulty in bending, kneeling, squatting or walking and your knee pain is affecting your everyday life, it may be time to consider an orthopaedic consultation. If you have regular feelings of pain, instability or limited movement due to knee troubles, we have experts on hand to get you back to full health quickly.

You may not always experience knee pain when exercising, it may creep up on you, interrupt your sleep or flare up a while after physical activity. These are very common signs that our consultants see on a regular basis.

If you struggle with walking due to the above reasons, we have specialist orthopaedic consultants who can make a real difference to your life and are able to get you back enjoying an active lifestyle.

Call us today on: 01582 714 420, your health is incredibly important, so it shouldn’t be pushed aside.
