We are dedicated to supporting local healthcare professionals and aim to make the referral process as quick and easy as possible.

How to make a referral
Online referrals
SCI Gateway
The majority of our referrals are received via SCI Gateway. Spire Murrayfield Hospital is located under the NHS Lothian drop down menu. Once we receive the referral, we will contact your patient via telephone within one working day to arrange a suitable appointment. If your patient has medical insurance, we will ask for their insurance policy details and ask them to notify their insurers. Patients who are self-funding can also be referred using SCI Gateway.
Spire Connect
If your practice does not have access to SCI Gateway, you can also refer your private patients to us online using Spire Connect. The patient e-referral portal offers a fast, easy and fully secure way for GPs, practice staff and healthcare professionals to refer patients to Spire hospitals. As well as making secure online referrals for a broad range of treatments and tests and scans, you can also:
- Receive email confirmations – once your referral is submitted and processed
- Access sent referral information – at any time
- Find direct up to date contact information
- Save time and paper – it’s environmentally friendly

Fax referrals
You can also submit private patient referral letters to us by fax on 0131 316 2561.
Insured patients
Scheme/policy details are required at the time of booking an outpatient appointment as we require insurer authorisation.

Emergency admissions
Call 0131 334 0363 for Murrayfield or 0131 654 5600 for Shawfair Park and ask for the nurse in charge. Please note, as a day-case facility, Spire Shawfair Park Hospital has an estimated closing time of 10pm; if required, patients will be re-admitted to Spire Murrayfield Hospital. We will aim to call you back within 20 minutes to update you on the progress of the admission. Neither of these hospitals have accident and emergency facilities.
Medical admissions
At Spire Murrayfield Hospital, we can offer medical admissions for long or short stays under the care of a consultant. For more information on this service contact 0131 316 2507.
