Background Information
Professional profile:

Dr Tony Scriven is a Consultant Cardiologist in private practice at Spire South Bank Hospital. He holds UK and EU specialist accreditation in both medicine and cardiology and is actively involved in most aspects of adult heart disease. He treats patients with chest pains, shortness of breath, heart murmurs, dizziness, collapse, palpitations etc, and has particular experience in the investigation and management of coronary heart disease by angiography and stenting.

For many, the possibility of heart symptoms is a worrying event. The need for high-tech invasive tests can make the contact with medical specialists seem technocratic and impersonal. Dr Scriven strives to maintain the traditional medical values of patient-centeredness, matching advice and treatment wherever possible to the work and lifestyle priorities of the individual. This includes attention to general health, diet and long term cardiovascular fitness.

Dr Scriven's main NHS post is Consultant Cardiologist at Worcestershire Royal Hospital. He also has honorary consultant appointments at the Heart & Lung Centre, New Cross Hospital, Wolverhampton; and at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham.

He qualified in London at Westminster Hospital (now part of Imperial College) and received a broad training in cardiovascular medicine and cardiology at leading centres in London, Paris and Glasgow. This included posts at the Royal Postgraduate Medical School, the National Heart Hospital and Great Ormond Street. He was among the first in the UK to use and develop techniques such as transoesophageal echo; and to receive dedicated training in coronary angioplasty and stenting. First appointed as a Consultant Cardiologist in the University Hospitals, Leicester in 1992, he set up and led an invasive cardiology service at the General teaching hospital while also involved in the coronary angioplasty service at the Cardiothoracic Unit at Glenfield Hospital. He moved to Worcester in 1999 to set up the current department of cardiology, which through the combined efforts of a growing number of his colleagues has developed into one of the best-equipped departments of its type. He has an extensive background in clinical and laboratory research, ranging from hypertension and heart failure to laser angioplasty. he continues clinical research and teaching in his current post.
