I qualified at St Thomas' Hospital, London and subsequently trained in cardiology at the Brompton and St George's Hospitals, London. I was a British Heart Foundation Junior Research Fellow (1983) and have been a Consultant Cardiologist in Southampton since 1989. I have extensive experience in all aspects of general cardiology as well as sub-specialty expertise in interventional cardiology.
I was previously honorary secretary of the British Cardiovascular Intervention Society (1992-1996) and more recently President of the British Cardiac Society (2003-5).
I hold honorary professorships in London at Queen Mary’s University (QMUL), and University College (UCL), and have published on various aspects of cardiology and service delivery. I was Deputy National Clinical Director for Heart Disease & Stroke (2007-11), and in 2013 I was appointed as the National Clinical Director for Cardiovascular Disease, at the Department of Health (England).”
