Mr Livesey has been a Consultant Cardiac Surgeon at the University Hospital Southampton since 1990. He has performed over 7500 cardiac operations in Southampton during this time. His surgical experience encompasses all aspects of adult cardiac surgery. This includes both first time and redo coronary artery bypass grafting and valve procedures as well as thoracic aortic surgery. Mr Livesey has a special interest and expertise in mitral valve surgery. He is acknowledged as a British and International expert on repair of the mitral valve, having performed over 1000 of these procedures, including his own now recognised modifications of mitral valve repair technique. Mr Livesey’s personal operative results, and those of the Cardiac Unit at University Hospital Southampton (UHS), are available for public scrutiny at the Healthcare Commission website (www.heartsurgery.cqc.org.uk). His personal operative outcomes, and those of the Cardiac Unit at UHS, have consistently been significantly better than expected when adjusted for patient risk. The outcomes at UHS compare favourably with other Cardiac Units in the United Kingdom.
Mr Livesey has performed almost 2000 cardiac procedures at Spire with a mortality rate less than 0.50% for all cases - despite a varied case mix. The outcomes for the Cardiac Surgical Group at Spire Southampton are especially outstanding considering the surgical and operative risk profiles of patients are equivalent to many much larger Cardiac Units in the United Kingdom.
Mr Livesey has over 25 years of experience in clinical research in the field of cardiac surgery. This has resulted in the publication of over 60 peer reviewed publications. His major field of professional interest and expertise is in the field of mitral valve repair and reconstruction. He has not only published widely on his own experience but also described his own modified mitral valve repair technique. He was recently the leading implanter in the European registry on the new “PHYSIO II” mitral annuloplasty ring.
Mr Livesey has a long standing involvement and leadership reputation both at regional and national level in cardiac surgery. He has been a speciality advisor to NCEPOD and an assessor for the National Clinical Assessment Service as well as a specialist advisor to NICE. He is a member of the Specialist Advisory Committee for Cardiothoracic Surgery as well as a National Clinical Lead for NHS improvement (HEART). He is an examiner for the final FRCS (Cardiothoracic) Intercollegiate Examination. He is the lead for re-validation with the Society for Cardiothoracic Surgery in GB & Ire and was Chair of the Cardiac Surgery Clinical Expert Panel of Healthcare for London. He is currently Chair of the Cardiothoracic Specialist Advisory Committee of the Surgical Royal Colleges.
Mr Livesey received his undergraduate training at Manchester University graduating MB, ChB in 1979. He trained in Cardiothoracic surgery in Papworth, St. Georges and Middlesex Hospitals before becoming Senior Registrar at the Brompton and National Heart Hospitals in London between 1987 – 1989. From 1989 – 1990 he was a Fellow at Duke University, North Carolina, USA. On return to the United Kingdom he came to Southampton 1990 as a Consultant Cardiac Surgeon. In 2010 he was appointed Lead Surgeon, Cardiac Surgery at the University Hospital Southampton.
