Background Information
Professional profile:

Having studied medicine in Edinburgh as an undergraduate, Mr Clayton qualified in 2000 and remained in Edinburgh for his basic and higher specialist surgical training. He undertook a specialist training fellowship in complex surgery of the Foot & Ankle in Glasgow in 2009, followed by a lower limb reconstruction fellowship in Toronto. Mr Clayton has undertaken further specialist training in ankle replacement and forefoot deformity correction surgery with leading European Foot & Ankle specialists in cities including Zurich, Bordeaux, Paris and Padua.

Mr Clayton took up post as a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon in February 2010 as the first surgeon in Fife with a major subspecialty interest in Foot & Ankle surgery. He performs the full range of Foot & Ankle surgery including ankle replacements, hindfoot deformity surgery, ligament reconstructions and arthroscopic ankle surgery using modern techniques. He carries out forefoot deformity correction using techniques which include the scarf osteotomy and minimally invasive (keyhole) surgery for bunion correction; these procedures allow rapid post-operative mobilisation without the need for plaster casting. He also performs general and specialist foot and ankle trauma surgery. Mr Clayton introduced the Cartiva implant to Scotland for treatment of osteoarthritis of the great toe (hallux rigidus).

Mr Clayton has taken a leading role in developing Foot & Ankle surgical services in Scotland and across the United Kingdom. He has organised and taught on specialist aspects of Foot and Ankle surgery for trainee surgeons and other health professionals.

Mr Clayton is a prominent member of the British Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society and was elected to its Scientific Committee in 2014.

Personal profile:

Mr Clayton has lived in Edinburgh since 1994. He has a range of outside interests which include walking, photography, travel, wine and malt whisky. These have increasingly taken a back seat recently as they have been superseded by the demands of his three small children.
