Spire Roding's Oncology Nurses Mary Casey & Jan Clark talk about the cancer care services at Spire Roding Hospital in Redbridge on the Essex and East London borders:
Spire Roding Hospital has an excellent breast cancer team consisting of breast care nurses, surgeons, oncologists, radiologists, radiographers and physiotherapists.
We have “one stop” breast clinics using the most up to date diagnostic equipment including digital mammography, ultrasound, MRI and CT. The breast care nurse supports the patient from diagnosis and throughout subsequent treatment. The hospital can be contacted at any time for advice, support or information.
To continue this support (bosom buddies) a breast care support group meets every 6- 8 weeks. At these meetings we may have speakers if requested or an informal social get together. We invite all people diagnosed with breast cancer when they come to see the oncologist initially in outpatients. When they attend the support group they tell us what they would like in terms of consultant speakers and what topics; mastectomy underwear; personal shoppers; “look good feel better” (make up advice); alternative treatments and much more.
We have meals out together and the group consists of past and present patients. They support each other and we are there to ensure the meetings are organised and their needs are met.
We are available to patients 24/7. They can visit the oncology unit at any time, if they are concerned or just want to chat or they can ring us. We call it our “drop in centre”. All patients have my mobile number (Oncology Lead Nurse) and Jan Clark (breast care nurse).
Charity days are hosted regularly at Spire Roding Hospital. Most recently Spire Roding Hospital raised £720.00 for the Macmillan cancer charity on Spire Roding’s Annual Coffee morning. Also on 29 October we will be holding our annual “pink day” to raise money for breast cancer research.
