UroLift - treatment for enlarged prostates

Spire Regency Hospital are now able to offerpatients an innovative new treatment for enlarged prostates. The prostatic urethral lift (PUL) procedure using the UroLift® device is now available with our consultant urological surgeon Mr Andrew Sinclair.

The procedure is quick, taking 45 minutes under sedation or a light anaesthetic

About enlarged prostates

Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) is a non-cancerous growth of the prostate which causes it to enlarge and can lead to urinary problems. The prostate is a gland located between the penis and the bladder which surrounds the urethra. The urethra is the tube which drains urine from the body and carries semen. An enlarged prostate can put pressure on and block the urethra to cause symptoms such as:

  • Urgent/ frequent need to urinate both day and night
  • A weak or slow urinary stream
  • Difficulty fully  emptying the bladder
  • Difficulty or delay in starting urination
  • A urinary stream that starts and stops

For some, the symptoms will be mild and not require treatment, however for others the symptoms may have a significant impact on their quality of life.

UroLift® treatment

Spire Regency Hospital is now offering patients a new treatment using the UroLift® device led by our Consultant Urological surgeon Mr Andrew Sinclair. This minimally invasive treatment system opens the blocked urethra by lifting or holding prostate tissue out of the way.

Unlike other treatments to combat enlarged prostates, UroLift® does not involve cutting, heating or removing any prostate tissue, which can cause long term side effects such as erectile dysfunction, urinary incontinence and retrograde ejaculation (dry orgasm). The aim of UroLift® is to offer patients relief from symptoms caused by BPH and help them return to normal activity in days rather than weeks and months.

The procedure

The UroLift® system is inserted into the urethra through the tip of the penis, using endoscopic guidance. A fine needle is then passed up the urethra through the prostate and small implants, connected together by suture material, then attached to each side of the prostate tissue and pulled back to stop the prostate gland pushing on the urethra, allowing urine to pass through freely. This treatment is possible because the prostate gland tissue is comprised of a series of ducts, which make it compressible.

Typically, the procedure involves placement of at least four implants, but depending on the size of the prostate and the location of the growth, more or less implants may be required.

The procedure is very quick, usually taking approximately 45 minutes under sedation or a light general anaesthetic. Patients are normally able to leave the hospital within a few hours of the operation and can return to normal activity as soon as they feel confident to do so. Patients have experienced symptom relief as early as two weeks post operation. The implants are made from surgical stainless steel which resists corrosion and allows them to be permanent.

Benefits of UroLift® treatment:

Patients may prefer to have the UroLift® treatment because:

  • It requires no overnight stay
  • It preserves sexual function, in particular maintaining normal ejaculation and sensation
  • They can return to normal daily activities soon after treatment
  • They experience meaningful symptom relief
  • It is less invasive than certain estbalished methods
