“Two surgeons, who treat patients at Spire Regency Hospital, have made headlines all around the world – after stitching back a man’s severed arm.
Retired fireman, Stuart Frain, accidentally sliced off his left arm while cutting wood with a circular saw in his remote back garden near Rochdale. Amazingly, he grabbed the severed limb and ran off to look for help. Using a passer by’s dog lead and a stick as a make-shift tourniquet, he managed to stem the blood loss until an ambulance arrived and packed his arm in ice.
Consultant Plastic Surgeon, Vivien Lees and Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Martin Holt then took over. In theatre at Wythenshawe Hospital, they spent seven hours through the night, re-attaching 50 year old Stuart Frain’s limb, joining up shattered bone, artery, blood vessels and muscle.
The skill of Miss Lees and Mr Holt and the sensational nature of the story, saw the news item flashed around the globe’s newspapers, TV, Radio and websites. Consultant Plastic Surgeon Miss Lees, who led the team of medics that attached his severed arm described the incident as “extraordinary” and said Mr Frain was “lucky” to be alive. “We joined up the muscles and tendons and put together the arteries and veins. It was a complicated operation and it’s not everyday you get an incident like this”.
At Spire Regency Hospital, Miss Lees is highly respected for her private cosmetic surgery procedures such as face lifts (SMAS), eye bag removal, nose re-shaping, tummy tuck and breast enlargement and reduction.
Mr Holt is an expert in the field of upper limb surgery, specifically complex shoulder surgery and key hole surgery.
