Background Information 
Professional profile:

Dr Stewart qualified as a consultant cardiologist and general physician in September 2003, having trained at the Wessex Cardiothoracic Centre, Southampton and at the Royal Brompton Hospital, London.  In 2005 after 21 years in  the Royal Navy, he became an NHS consultant in Portsmouth.  His NHS practice covers all aspects of general cardiology with extensive experience in invasive and non invasive investigations.

His main interests include the assessment and treatment of structural heart disease, ischaemic heart disease, familial cardiac disease and cardiovascular risk factors.

Dr Stewart's NHS work extends into his private practice where he consults for all aspects of general cardiology (including chest pain, heart murmurs and valvular disease, palpitations, dizziness and blackout, shortness of  breath, heart failure and hypertension).

He has extensive experience in cardiovascular screening for recreational and professional diving, flying and occupational activities and advises on aspects of sports cardiology, including pre-participation screening and the cardiac aspects of endurance training.

Personal profile:

Dr Stewart is married with two sons (16 and 18).  His eldest son is following in dad's footsteps by training in medicine at Oxford University, and his youngest is a keen sportsman.  His wife is a Community Midwife and the family live in Denmead.  A previous keen sportsman, he now takes a more passive role in participation but keeps fit with regular gym sessions.  His leisure interests include watching rugby; he is a keen dinghy sailor and enjoys classical music.  He also provides a free family taxi service ferrying his sons to sports and music activities.

He is a Director and currently Treasurer of the Portsmouth Cardiac Associates, which offers cardiac services to general practices and private organisations.
