Welcome to our two new consultants

We are pleased to welcome our two new consultants, Mr Giles Toogood and Mr Simon Jones,.

Mr Giles Toogood is a consultant hepatobiliary and liver transplant surgeon at St James’s University Hospital, Leeds, and clinical associate professor at the University of Leeds. He joined our team of general surgeons at Spire Methley Park Hospital in January.

After training in Oxford, he completed his hepatobiliary and transplant training as a senior registrar in Oxford, Cambridge and Adelaide, Australia before being appointed to his current post in 1998. He was awarded a doctor of medicine in Oxford in 1995.

He subspecialises in hepatobiliary surgery and has personal experience of over 4,000 laparoscopic cholecystectomies, 1,000 liver resections and 750 liver transplants.

He has written more than 130 peer-reviewed papers that have been published in international and national medical journals. He sits on many international and national committees related to hepatobiliary surgery and in particular sat on the NICE Cholelithiasis and Cholecystitis Guideline Development Group. He recently stepped down as founder Chairman and President of the Great Britain and Ireland Hepatopancreaticobiliary Association.

He has a major interest in gallbladder disease and in day case laparoscopic cholecystectomy. He and his colleague Mr Andrew Smith formed the Yorkshire Gallstone Clinic (www.yorkshiregallstoneclinic.co.uk) in 2012, which now treats over 300 new gallstone patients a year.

He is an ex-first class cricketer and sits on the Main MCC Committee at Lords. He has three teenage daughters and a wife who works as a local GP.



Mr Simon Jones studied medicine at Leeds University Medical School and went on to complete both basic and higher surgical training in the Yorkshire region. He completed the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS Tr and Orth) in 2011 and was admitted on to the specialist register in 2012. During his training he obtained a Master of Science degree (MSc) within the field of trauma and orthopaedic surgery.

He has undertaken two specialist fellowships within Yorkshire. The first was in Harrogate with Mr Nick London concentrating on all aspects of knee surgery. The second fellowship was in York with Mr Nick Carrington and Mr Tony Maury focusing on hip arthroplasty and revision surgery.

He completed his specialist training with a year long fellowship at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre in Oxford where he gained experience in all aspects of hip and knee surgery.

Mr Jones is a keen teacher and is actively involved in both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching. He holds senior lecturer status at the University of Leeds.

Mr Jones is married with two children. He enjoys playing and watching rugby and exploring the Yorkshire countryside.

He joined the orthopaedic consultant team at Spire Methley Park Hospital in January.
