In addition to a busy general adult and paediatric ENT practice Mr Oates leads a National/International tertiary referral service treating conductive hearing loss caused by ossicular damage and Otosclerosis. He co-introduced fibre lasers to UK ear surgery in the early 1990s and remains in the forefront of developments in this field. A Faculty Member of several prestigious international Otology courses for the last two decades he also lectures in Europe, North America and further afield.
In 2003, together with a French colleague, he conceived and is Vice President of the LION Foundation. This aims to bring together the best ear surgeons in the world to promote training and share international expertise by regular worldwide transmission of live ear surgery www.lion-web.org. He has represented the UK and Eire continually in Europe since 2004 and is on the Executive Councils of the major European ENT Organisations CEORL-HNS including being Treasurer of the Confederation of European ORL-HNS, peer elected by European colleagues. Previous positions include Member of the Specialist Advisory Committee Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, Council Member ENT-UK, Council Member the British Society of Otology, President of YCOHNS and Government appointed Council Member of The Hearing Aid Council. He holds a Gold Award granted by the ACCEA for excellence in his field in 2003 and renewed by the ACCEA in 2011.
He is committed to teaching and sharing expertise between different specialties. In 2003 he founded and co-organises an annual international course aimed at improving clinical service by fostering increased awareness and cooperation between Hospital Consultants, GPs and Hospital Managers, about to celebrate its 13th year
