Dr Hartland qualified in medicine in 1991, having won a scholarship whilst at medical school.
In 2002 he was appointed Consultant Chemical Pathologist at North West London Hospitals NHS Trust. In 2003 he established that Trust's Medical Weight Management Clinic. This was only the second NHS medical weight management clinic in London and he became a model for the establishment of weight management clinics.
In 2004, he returned to the West Midlands, being appointed Consultant Chemical Pathologist and Medical Lead for Obesity Services at Walsall. Walsall is one of 2 designated centres for Bariatric Surgery in the West Midlands. Together with Mr Amir Khan, he led the development of this service into a multi-disciplinary centre of excellence.
