Kimberley now works full time at Spire Leicester Hospital continuing the expansion of a successful, positive and individualised service to children, young people and their families

.Kimberley is mum to an energetic 4 year old who keeps her very busy outside of work. She likes to travel and explore news places, Italy being her favourite!in higher education.

Rita Ryan

Rita is a dual-qualified nurse which means she undertook equal parts nurse training for adults and children. However, nursing children is her passion and so when she finished her honours degree and training in February 2014 (completed in Trinity College- the University of Dublin and the Adelaide and Meath Hospitals incorporating the National Children’s Hospital respectively) she decided she would strive to nurse children in an acute setting to consolidate her nurse training.

After four and a half years of university, which was filled with a variety of clinical exposure at home in Ireland, Rita decided the U.K. would offer better opportunities for her career. On moving to England, she spent two fantastic years in the Leicester Royal Infirmary high dependency unit for children as a staff nurse, caring for children with acute and chronic conditions -often life-threatening illnesses. There, she gained a variety of clinical skills and began to develop a growing portfolio.

Looking for exposure in a different clinical setting, Rita commenced full-time employment at Spire Leicester as a senior children’s nurse and works alongside Kim Veasey, the Lead Children’s Nurse as well as the rest of the fantastic paediatric team. Since starting at the hospital, she has successfully gained an advanced paediatric life support qualification which she will update annually. Rita is also currently studying at De Montfort University to become a student nurse mentor as part of her continuous learning.

Rita is the youngest of seven children (“a typical big Irish family” she says), and auntie to 3 handsome nephews and 5 beautiful nieces.  Make-up and food are her other passions in life!

Jo trained as a Staff nurse at Charles Frears School of nursing and then as a Registered Sick Children's Nurse with a diploma in higher education at Nottingham University. Jo went on to achieve her ENB 998 in teaching and assessing and undertook her ENB 415 Paediatric Intensive Care training and updates her skills in immediate paediatric life support annually.

Jo has nursing experience within the fields of paediatric reconstructive surgery, paediatric intensive care, retrieval of the sick child and children’s medical admissions. She is an experienced mentor to student nurses and junior staff nurses. Jo has worked alongside Kerry and Lindsey to develop a safe and successful service for children at Spire Leicester Hospital and is committed to caring for children and their families, providing good communication and high standards of care

Jo took time out from her nursing career to raise her three children. With her husband and children she has sampled the Australian way of life, a years’ experience they all enjoyed! Jo loves to spend quality time with her family. She is an active chairperson on the PTA at her children’s school, a keen runner and has raised money for charity at several prestigious running events.

Kerry Ward

Kerry qualified as a paediatric nurse in 1997 at Wolverhampton University with a diploma in higher education. She has her ENB 998 in teaching and assessing and A1 NVQ assessor qualifications which enables her to teach and support student nurses and healthcare assistants. In 2011 she gained her certificate in advanced paediatric life support which she updates yearly.

Kerry started her nursing career on a general children’s ward at Queen’s Hospital, in Burton on Trent, working her way up to senior staff nurse level. Her experiences cover medical, surgical, orthopaedic, high dependency, neonatal, emergency and psychiatric nursing. She was an established team leader and link children’s nurse for bereavement and palliative care.

Kerry took some time away from the ward in 2002, spending a year working as a school nursing sister in a residential school for children with learning and communication difficulties. Kerry then continued her senior staff nurse role at Queen's Hospital before joining Spire Leicester Hospital in 2012 until July 2016, where she worked to help establish the new services for children.  Kerry now works as a bank nurse here, supporting the paediatric team. Kerry believes passionately in providing a safe and positive experience for the children, young people and families who visit.

Outside of work, Kerry is a mum of two beautiful - if not a little noisy - children! She loves nothing more than days out with them but if she gets a little time to herself, immersing herself in soppy romantic novels is her treat
