Professional profile:

Mr Hasan Ahmed is an orthopaedic consultant offering specialist shoulder surgery in East London. He is a Senior Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon whose NHS base is at Whipps Cross University Hospital, part of Barts Health NHS Trust, East London. He has been the Head of the Orthopaedic Department (Clinical Lead) since 2012.

He has undertaken advanced Fellowship training in Shoulder and Upper Limb Surgery in London. He has also trained in Upper Limb Surgery in Southampton and Portsmouth. He has extensive experience in Arthroscopic Surgery of the shoulder and elbow and since his appointment as Consultant in 2005, has pioneered advanced shoulder and elbow arthroscopy techniques at Whipps Cross University Hospital.

In 2012, Mr Ahmed was selected as one of a handful of leading UK orthopaedic and sports surgeons, by the organizing committee of the Olympic Games (LOCOG), to provide specialist surgical care to elite Olympic and Paralympic athletes participating in the London 2012 Olympics.

Mr Ahmed has written many peer-reviewed publications. His Master’s thesis investigated the management of complex elbow fractures by minimal invasive fixation. He lectures nationally on shoulder surgery and elbow surgery and teaches on courses for the FRCS (Tr & Orth) degree.

At the Spire Roding Hospital, Mr Ahmed treats patients with shoulder, elbow, wrist and hand problems.

Shoulder : He treats most conditions by the latest shoulder arthroscopic (keyhole ) surgery and minimal invasive surgery techniques using state of the art equipment. This includes Frozen shoulder, dislocating shoulders, sports injuries, rotator cuff tears, arthritis and AC joint problems. Key-hole surgery greatly reduces postoperative pain, scarring and recovery time. He performs shoulder surgery including the latest Shoulder replacements such as the Reverse polarity shoulder replacement and shoulder resurfacing at Spire Roding Hospital in Essex.

Elbow: Mr Ahmed performs arthroscopic (keyhole) surgery of the elbow for treatment of arthritis, loose bodies, loss of elbow movement and tennis elbow. He also performs open surgery for tennis and golfer’s elbow. He performs ulnar nerve decompression at the elbow. He treats sports injuries such as biceps tendon ruptures. He performs Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) injections for tennis and golfer's elbow.

Wrist: Mr Ahmed performs surgery for ganglion cysts, wrist denervations, percutaneous and open fixation of scaphoid bone fractures and fixation of other complex wrist fractures.

Hand: He performs carpal tunnel decompressions, trigger finger releases, surgery for De Quervains tenosynovitis, surgery for thumb arthritis and surgery for Dupuytren’s contracture. He treats Dupuytren’s contracture both by standard surgical techniques and also by the latest technique of needle release. This is done in selected patients and can be performed in the out-patient clinic under local anaesthetic. It is also known as Needle Aponeurotomy (NA) and Percutaneous Needle Fasciotomy (PNF). He has also been trained in the use of Collagenase which is an enzyme that can dissolve abnormal Dupuytren’s contracture tissue.

Due to his expertise, Mr Ahmed is referred complex sports injuries and other injuries of the upper limb such as shoulder dislocations and fractures by his orthopaedic colleagues in East London. He treats many of these using the latest methods of minimal invasive fixation (key-hole surgery), greatly reducing operative trauma and enhancing recovery.

Personal profile:

I came to the UK in the sixties as a two year old. I grew up in the midlands and trained in orthopaedics in Liverpool and London. I am married to Aliya who is an Emergency Medicine Consultant in Basildon. We have 4 children, 3 of whom are in University. My twin daughters are medical students and my son is a dental student in London. My parents and grandfather were both doctors, therefore the twins will be the fourth generation of doctors in the family! I enjoy sports and play tennis, cricket and, occasionally, golf. I like to run and one day hope to run in the London marathon! I am a keen Arsenal fan, but sadly do not have a season ticket! I like reading and enjoy films, particularly science fiction and historical dramas. I also love to travel and experience new cultures and languages. In fact, this is one of the attractions for my working in East London and Essex: I get to meet people from all over the world!
