Mr Stuart King had treatment for his frozen shoulder by Mr Rajeev Sharma, consultant orthopaedic surgeon, at Spire Harpenden Hospital in January 2015.
Mr Stuart King who is currently undergoing post-operative physio at Spire Harpenden speaks about his experience with a frozen shoulder as well as his ongoing treatment and journey to recovery.
“Prior to my operation four weeks ago, I had been suffering from a frozen shoulder since August; it had been getting worse I was feeling more and more down about it. All my rituals were turned upside down and I was very limited in what I could do. I am a very active person, I am a keen mountain bike rider as well as doing karate and enjoying DIY. I have two young children, so being unable to lift one arm was very difficult for me. It’s very debilitating to lose all of this as I have a very active lifestyle.
“I first noticed twinges when I was at karate classes with my son, and the pain had developed by our family holiday last summer, so I couldn’t lift suitcases and was hit by a wall of pain when using my arm.
“As I don’t have the usual risk factors for a frozen shoulder (diabetes, a history of heart disease or stroke and being female) I believed the pain might go away itself, but after two months from my initial appointment with Mr Sharma, I had to go back as the pain was unmanageable.
“Mr Sharma was really good; he was helpful and took the time to give full explanations. I hadn’t had an operation before, but Mr Sharma put me at ease and took the time I needed to reassure me and make sure I knew all I needed.
“My operation was eight days after my consultation and the staff were very good and helpful; I have no complaints about any aspect of the care at all. I have been receiving physiotherapy since the operation four weeks ago including hydrotherapy. I’ve gained a lot of movement in my shoulder, but still have some way to go until I’m fully recovered.
“I have created a support group on Facebook to create a network for people suffering with frozen shoulders in Hertfordshire. Although I only created the group just over a week ago, I’ve already been contacted by people who want to ask questions about my experiences or share their own experiences with frozen shoulders. I am sticking closely to my physiotherapy regime, and hope to recover fully very soon.”
