Some of the patients who enquire with Spire Harpenden Hospital about weight loss surgery have tried many other diets and are looking for a solution that does not involve major slimming surgery. The idea of having a procedure to help them along their journey is an appealing one.
The new Obalon weight loss balloon is designed to be as minimally invasive as possible and allows patients to return to their normal daily activities on the same day as the procedure. The process for the procedure is very straight forward; the balloon is encased in a dissolvable pill which is attached to a wire for inflation. The pill is swallowed by the patient and an X-ray is performed to confirm it is in the correct location in the stomach, once this is confirmed the balloon is inflated and the wire is detached. Another X-ray is performed to confirm everything has been completed successfully and the patient remains awake throughout.
Patients can have up to three balloons inserted and the removal of the balloons takes place via endoscope under sedation 3 months after inflation. The entire process is performed by a trained professional and supported by our dietician who will advise all patients on their food choices.
Sarah has had 2 Obalon weight loss balloons fitted recently at Spire Harpenden Hospital and said “I couldn’t believe how quick the whole procedure was! I didn’t even need to get changed out of my normal clothes and I was back at work an hour later.” Patients are advised to eat a liquid food diet for the first 24 hours and slowly ease onto solid food. “I had a bit of discomfort while my body got used to it, but after a couple of days I couldn’t tell it was there.” Said Sarah “I have noticed a change in my appetite and I’m looking forward to seeing the results. With the change in my diet, increasing my exercise and the balloons in place I hope to lose up to 21lbs (9kg)”
