National Acupuncture week

Many people are not sure about how acupuncture works or how many conditions it can treat. With National Acupuncture Week running from 3rd to the 10th March, we wanted to try and dispel some myths about acupuncture.

Acupuncture has been developed, tested and refined over many years. It originated in China and dates back as far as the first century BC. Clinical trials have confirmed the effectiveness of acupuncture and it’s now widely available in countries all over the world.

The Chinese believed that the human body is covered in channels that help the flow of energy around the human body. A healthy person doesn’t have any blockages and the energy is able to flow freely. It is when a channel becomes blocked that a person might experience pain. By inserting needles along the channel lines they are able to unblock them and free the energy flow again.

Modern science has confirmed that the stimulation of acupuncture points sends impulses along the nerves to the spinal cord and the brain setting up reflex patterns. Endorphins are released, which are the brain’s own natural pain killers and anti-inflammatory agents, thus offering pain relief.

Each patient’s treatment is tailored to their specific needs, depending on where the pain is located and what the consultant believes could be causing it.

Our Consultant Acupuncturist, Dr Michael Curtin, has been working at Spire Harpenden Hospital for the last 18 months, he is able to treat a range of complaints including;
