A “delicate operation” at Spire Harpenden Hospital

A new MRI magnet weighing almost five tonnes is craned in safety to Spire Harpenden.

On Sunday 25 October the magnet for the new MRI suite was being delivered and fitted at the hospital. The magnet was lifted in by crane and there was no margin for error, a delicate task as the machine weighs 4.8 tonnes.

The state of the art machine will significantly improve patients’ experience, as it is significantly quieter and includes relaxation features including mood lighting which will allow patients to listen to music and watch videos during their scan.

The high quality images taken by the machine will allow a swift and accurate diagnosis by our consultant radiologists who analyse the images as soon as they are taken.

The new MRI machine is part of a wider investment, which has included a new reception, and a new CT scanner which will open in January 2016. This will be followed by a new outpatients department, scheduled to open in March 2016.

For Claudia Welsh, imaging manager, the delivery of the magnet was the culmination of years of planning: “Watching the magnet being lifted into the building was a nervewracking but exciting moment. Now it has arrived I’m really looking forward to getting patients into our suite to experience everything it has to offer.”

Now the magnet has been delivered, the suite is due to be completed in November 2015.
