Varicose veins are caused by a failure of the valves in the superficial veins. This allows blood to flow in the wrong direction, outwards and down towards the foot. This puts too high a pressure in the superficial veins which stretch, dilate and elongate, in other words become ‘varicose’. Varicose veins should not be ignored. If treated early it is easier to get the legs back to normal.
In general, the earlier treatment is carried out, the better the long term result.
Types of varicose vein treatments available
There are several different techniques for performing varicose vein surgery; the Spire Gatwick Park vein clinic offers the latest technologies including Endovenous Laser Therapy ( EVLT), Radio-Frequency Ablation (VNUS closure) and foam sclerotherapy. These are a minimally invasive techniques offering same day treatment that does not result in varicose vein removal, reducing post operative discomfort and speeds up patient recovery, compared to conventional surgery.
The next step
The first step in having your veins successfully treated is to book an appointment with a consultant. We would require a GP referral letter in order to book an intial consultation. You will have a scan on the veins called a Duplex scan. The purpose of this is to identify the exact sites where the valves have failed. It will also show whether all the other veins are healthy including the deep veins. The outcome of the scan will allow the consultant to offer the correct treatment.
