While I was playing football around a week ago I twisted my leg and have found bending my knee has become quite painful. I thought it might go away at first but it’s now starting to worry me. Do you have any advice on how I can treat this problem? Thanks. Peter, Crawley

Mr Campbell's response:

Many football knee injuries simply result in soft tissue strains which progressively settle over about six weeks.  However, if the knee has become swollen and has not settled over two weeks, medical advice should be sought.  The commonest cause of continued pain following a twisting injury is damage to the menisci (cartilages) which sometimes need surgical treatment.  I would advise that if the knee is still causing you significant problems by three weeks from the injury, that you should see a Knee Orthopaedic Specialist with a view to an MRI scan to accurately show whether the injury will settle spontaneously or needs further treatment.
