Mr Kulkarni worked on his research project ‘Breast duct microendoscopy’ at Guy’s and St Thomas Hospital. He is keen to get involved in research projects involving application of new technology to breast surgery and improve its outcome. He is currently a co-investigator on the project investigating role of an imaging device to assess clear margins of breast cancer specimen during the intra-operative period.

Professional profile:

Mr Kulkarni is a graduate of Bombay University, India (Sir Grant Medical College and JJ Group of Hospitals). He undertook his postgraduate general surgical training in Bombay University. He submitted his dissertation on ‘Treatment of male breast cancer’ as a part of his Masters in General Surgery (MS), Bombay University.

He then completed four years of surgical oncology training at Tata Memorial Cancer Hospital, Bombay, India. Tata Memorial Hospital is the largest tertiary referral cancer hospital in the South East Asia. The aim of this surgical training programme is to train Surgeons in comprehensive management of cancer care. The training programme included rotations in different specialty services such as: Head and neck cancer, Breast and thoracic cancer, Gastrointestinal cancer (Upper and lower GI, Hepato-biliary), Gynaecology-urology cancer, Bone and soft tissue cancer, and Plastics reconstruction service.

It was during this period where his enthusiasm for cancer surgery first surfaced and Mr. Kulkarni developed interest in management of breast cancer.

He worked at the Breast unit, Department of Academic Oncology, Guy’s and St Thomas Hospital London for two and half years as research registrar where he completed his clinical research project on Breast Duct micro-endoscopy. He received a distinction for his dissertation entitled ‘Development of the technique of breast duct micro-endoscopy’, submitted as part of his MSc in Surgical Technology (Imperial College and St Mary’s Hospital Paddington, University of London) in 2007.

He worked in London for several years before moving to Edinburgh. He joined as a higher surgical trainee registrar for a year at the Edinburgh breast unit. He trained in several aspects of breast cancer surgery including oncoplastic breast reconstruction during this time.

Personal profile:

Mr Kulkarni is a Consultant Surgeon at the Edinburgh breast unit, Western General Hospital. This is one of the largest breast units in the country. His special interests are Oncoplastic breast reconstruction for patients with breast cancer, management of benign breast diseases, and Breast duct micro-endoscopy.

He is involved in the diagnosis, care and medical/surgical management of benign breast diseases such as breast pain, benign breast lumps (fibroadenoma, cysts etc), treatment of breast infection, nipple discharge as well as counselling and prophylactic surgery with reconstruction for patients with high risk family history of breast cancer.

He regularly conducts clinics for screen detected breast abnormalities/cancer patients at the Ardmillan Breast Cancer Screening Centre, Edinburgh.

He is actively involved in undergraduate teaching at the Edinburgh Medical School. He is also a tutor for the ESSQ and ChM qualifications for the University of Edinburgh/Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. He was awarded the ‘innovative teaching project’ grant in 2012 by the Edinburgh University to set up and run a website dedicated to the ‘management of breast diseases’ for medical students/ surgical trainees.
