Special clinical interests:

After junior posts in general internal medicine and gaining his MRCP in 1975 Dr Jones became an ODA (now DFID) funded General Physician at Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre, a Tanzanian teaching hospital 1976-1982.  He gained a Certificate of Completion of Training from the Joint Committee of Higher Medical Training in Internal Medicine in 1980.
After locum Consultant posts at the Infectious Diseases Unit he became a part-time Associate Specialist in Communicable Disease in 1989.  He was appointed as Consultant in Infectious Diseases in 2005 and retired from NHS work in October 2014.  At RIDU he commenced a clinic for people living with HIV in 1985, for general ID and post travel illness in 1989, founded the RIDU Travel Clinic in 1993 and ran a clinic for patients with chronic fatigue syndrome from 2005-14.
His developed expertise is in Infectious diseases with a strong interest in tropical, travel medicine, chronic fatigue syndrome, and expatriate health.  

Research interests:

Mike has published 25 papers in peer reviewed journals, another 30 short reports and letters and three chapters in medical textbooks on a wide variety of topics mostly centred on clinical tropical and travel medicine.  He has particular interests in the management of schistosomiasis, malaria and the psychological issues faced by expatriate volunteers.

He has served on the Editorial Board for the Elsevier journal ‘Travel Medicine and Infectious Disease’ 2007 to the present, the International Medicine Committee, Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh 1996-9, the Scottish Medicines Commission as an Expert Advisor on anti-infectives from 2008 to 2014, the NHS Scotland National Plasma Products Expert Advisory Group 2009-14 and the Scottish Malaria Advisory Group (Health Protection Scotland) 2012-14.

Background Information 
Professional profile:

After return from East Africa in 1982 he co-founded HealthLink360, a health care charity, located near Edinburgh, providing whole person health care for expatriates working with voluntary agencies in the developing world.  He was Medical Director 1983-2006 and is now Honorary Consultant Physician.  He set up a public access Travel Clinic for the charity in 2004.

He was Editor of the quarterly journal Tropical Doctor, published by the Royal Society of Medicine 1995-2002, and has edited the vaccination and anti-malarial prophylaxis pages of the GP newspaper Pulse since 1994. 

He lectures widely on HIV, infectious Diseases and tropical medicine, and internationally on Travel Medicine.  After being invited become a Founder Fellow of the Faculty of Travel Medicine at RCPS Glasgow in 2006 he was asked to chair the Examination Committee in 2007, and was elected Vice Dean in 2009 and Dean in 2012, where he is encouraging international links and educational development, and enjoys chairing a skilled  and enthusiastic Board.  

Over the past 20 years he has maintained links with Malawi and particularly Zambia, and from 2003-9 made 5 visits to Zambia supporting the roll out of ART with the Lothian-Zambia HIV/AIDS Partnership.

Personal profile:

Mike’s is married with two children, one a GP and one a Deputy Headmaster and has six grandchildren.  He enjoys travel, downhill skiing, carpentry, DIY, music and is a member of his local church.  He is hoping to develop fly fishing and golf as additional forms of relaxation this year.
