Dr Jonathan Dakin is a Consultant Respiratory Physician with a specific interest in Sleep Medicine. He completed specialist training at the Royal Brompton Hospital, including a doctoral research fellowship. He was appointed to Portsmouth in 2003 and established local sleep services. He is now the Clinical Director of Respiratory and Sleep Medicine at QA.
Dr Dakin sees people who may be affected by either simple or complex sleep disorders, including obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA), restless legs, circadian rhythm disorder (e.g. delayed sleep phase), jetlag, insomnia and narcolepsy. Dr Dakin also leads the domiciliary non-invasive ventilation service in Portsmouth for patients with neuromuscular or other causes of ventilatory insufficiency.
Many conditions may be diagnosed by a consultation, though further investigation will be needed for others. This may include sleep study, which allows breath-by-breath monitoring overnight. Actigraphy may also be helpful by charting sleep / wake patterns over a period of weeks.
People diagnosed with OSA may benefit from CPAP treatment. Restless legs syndrome is a poorly understood condition which may be maddening in severity, but responds to treatment. Sufferers of insomnia may benefit from a therapist-delivered program designed to re-align overnight sleep to a more normal pattern.
