Qualified from Westminster Medical School, London in 1980 and became a Fellow of The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and England in 1984. He trained in general surgery on the S W Thames Surgical Rotation at St. George's Hospital, London, Basingstoke and Adelaide, Australia developing a special interest in colorectal and laparoscopic surgery. He was appointed Consultant Surgeon to the Derbyshire Royal Infirmary in 1995 before moving to Frimley Park Hospital in 1998. He holds honorary appointments at The North Hampshire Hospital, Basingstoke and St. George's Hospital, London. At Frimley he is lead clinician for the colorectal cancer MDT. He is preceptor on the national training program for laparoscopic colorectal surgery and a member of faculty at the Pelican Centre in Basingstoke, MATTU in Guildford and the Royal College of Surgeons of England and Edinburgh. He is a member of Council for the Section of Coloproctology of The Royal Society of Medicine, the Association of Coloproctology Great Britain and Ireland and The Association of Laparoscopic Surgeons.

Married to Judy, a consultant anaesthetist at Frimley Park Hospital. They have two boys, Tom and William and live in Frensham. Mark enjoys the occasional game of golf and tennis and is a regular on the touchline for the boys rugby matches. Other pastimes include sailing, photography and field sports.
