Spire Cambridge Lea Hospital Top Consultants feature in The Times Good Surgeon Guide

January 2012

Three Consultants at Spire Cambridge Lea Hospital are the best UK specialists in their fields, according to the Times. The newspaper published a directory of Britain’s top surgeons which was published in December 2011. The surgeons are considered to be world-class leaders.

Below are surgeons Miss Helen Fernandes, Mr Richard Hardwick and Mr William Turner featured in the guide.

Miss Helen Fernandes
Consultant Neurosurgeon

Miss Fernandes is a Consultant Neurosurgeon at Cambridge University NHS Foundation Trust and has private practice at Spire Cambridge Lea Hospital. She specialises in both the treatment of adult and paediatric patients with brain and spinal problems.

Helen offers a wide range of neurosurgical expertise but has a particular interest in spinal neurosurgery, managing sciatica, back and neck pain as well as tumours of the spine. She is one of three complex spinal surgeons in Addenbrooke’s Hospital and also a member of the British Association of Spinal Surgeons, British Cervical Spine Society and the East Anglian Spinal Society. Her other special interest is Paediatric Neurosurgery being Lead Paediatric Neurosurgeon in Addenbrooke’s. She cares for children with hydrocephalus, brain and spinal tumours, following head and spinal injury and those born with congenital spinal and brain disorders such as spina bifida. She is in fact very proud to be a Medical Advisor to the Association of Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus SHINE (www.shinecharity.org.uk/).

Mr Richard Hardwick
General Surgeon

Mr Hardwick is a Consultant General Surgeon at Cambridge University NHS Foundation Trust and has private practice at Spire Cambridge Lea Hospital. He is an upper gastro-intestinal surgeon with a major interest in oesophageal (gullet) and gastric (stomach) conditions and laparoscopic (key hole) surgery.

He trained in the South West and was then a consultant in Cardiff before relocating to Cambridge. Mr Hardwick spent two years in research investigating a condition called Barrett's Oesophagus which is caused by gastro-oesophageal reflux (this causes heartburn). This condition is on the increase and has been linked to a rising incidence of gullet cancer. Mr Hardwick performs a wide range of laparoscopic operations including those for heartburn, gallstones, hernias and obesity.

Mr William Turner
Consultant Urologist

Mr Turner is a Consultant Urologist at Cambridge University NHS Foundation Trust and has private practice at Spire Cambridge Lea Hospital. He qualified from Cambridge and Oxford, and trained in Surgery and Urology in Oxford, Bath, Berne, and as a Senior Registrar on the Yorkshire Urology Training Programme. Mr Turner spent three years in the Department of Pharmacology in the University of Oxford doing research on the function of the bladder and urethra and how drugs affect them, to gain an MD. He had specialist training in the management of bladder cancer in Berne and in urology in patients with neurological conditions in Wakefield. At present, his work at Addenbrooke’s is focused very largely on the management of bladder cancer, with a very busy practice of radical surgery (cystectomy) for bladder cancer.
Mr Turner is a partner in the Cambridge Urology Clinic, together with his Addenbrooke’s colleagues, Vincent Gnanapragasam and Nikesh Thiruchelvam, based exclusively at the Spire Cambridge Lea Hospital.
