Professor Wegstapel trained in the UK as a general surgeon and gained specialist expertise in gastrointestinal and laparoscopic surgery.He is lead clinician for colorectal cancer surgery in Medway and is one of the leading laparoscopic colorectal surgeons in the country who also trains fellow surgeons in these advanced techniques.Professor Wegstapel has an interest in fast-track recovery programs for patients following abdominal surgery. He has developed a day case laparoscopic cholecystectomy, incisional and inguinal hernia service at Medway Hospital. He has an interest in colorectal surgery which includes the treatment of common conditions such as haemorrhoids, fistulae in ano, anal fissures, pilonidal sinuses, Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. Professor Wegstapel is a fully trained endoscopist which includes diagnostic and therapeutic colonoscopy.He is a senior lecturer at the University of Christchurch Canterbury and is the pathway lead for the Masters degree in minimally invasive surgery.
Professor Wegstapel is a keen sportsman and enjoys running, cycling and tennis. He has run the London Marathon twice supporting beating bowel cancer. He enjoys the theatre, gardening and DIY.
He has three young daughters and is a governor at Fawkham primary school.
