    Professional profile 

    After receiving higher surgical training in urology at various institutions in India (including All India Institute of Medical Sciences) and UK (London and the South East including the Institute of Urology & Nephrology), I worked as a consultant urological surgeon in the NHS for 26 years, which included more than 20 years at Medway Maritime Hospital, Kent.

    Currently my primary place for private consultation is at Spire Alexandra Hospital, Walderslade, Kent. My practice encompasses all aspects of urology. I have a special interest in urological cancer and male infertility and have undertaken more than 300 vasectomy reversals.

    Personal

    • Clinical Excellence ‘Silver Award’ awarded in 2007 by UK Department of Health for services to National Health Service
    • ‘B Distinction Award’ awarded in 2003 by UK Department of Health for services to National Health Service 

    As Consultant Urological Surgeon

    • Established a comprehensive Urology Department at Medway, which is now West Kent Urological Cancer Centre for Urology.
    • Established Medway as one of the centres in the UK offering patients Orthotopic Bladder Reconstruction (Neobladder) after Radical Cystectomy (Bladder Removal for malignancy).

      As Clinical Researcher

    • Authored about 50 papers in peer reviewed scientific journals (List can be accessed in Pubmed  Entrez under the author name: Mufti GR or Mufti Gulzar)
    •  Gave >40 presentations in prestigious international urology meetings such as British Association of Urological Surgeons (BAUS), American Urological Association (AUA), European Association of Urology (EAU), Société Internationale d’Urologie (SIU), Urological Society of India etc. I have also been an invited speaker at a number of prestigious meetings.

    • Was a recognised Teacher Guys Kings & Thomas’ (GKT) Medical School London for 15 years,
    • Was a trainer for senior urological trainees for 15 years
    • Was a past Examiner for Final MBBS, Guys Kings & Thomas’ (GKT) Medical School, University of London and University of Glasgow.
    • Was an examiner for MSc in Urology at the Institute of Urology, London.

     As Healthcare Manager

    • Authored the long-term strategic plan for Queen Elizabeth Hospital Barbados and introduced the Clinical Directorate organisational model.
    • Led Medway Maritime Hospital from a No Star Trust to a Foundation Trust; and one of the Top 40 hospitals and Most Improved Hospital in CHKS-2009 Ratings.
    • Led the development of tertiary services in Cardiology, Chemotherapy and established the West Kent Vascular service, and West Kent Urology Cancer services at Medway Maritime Hospital.
    • Developed training links with overseas institutions.
    • Introduced and developed the concepts of clinical governance in a private UK hospital in 1998 when these were unknown in the private sector.

    • I am currently working on a book entitled, ‘The Tiger Country’, which is a compilation of interesting factual stories about the world of surgery and surgeons.
