    Professional profile:
    Initially trained at Charing Cross Medical School, I spent time in general medicine and paediatrics. Taking up my first consultant post in 1988 at Wirral Hospitals NHS Trust in acute medicine and rheumatology, I was appointed the first clinical director of rehabilitation and rheumatology. In 1994 I became the first director of the Wirral Clinical practice research unit. I was also appointed Post Graduate Tutor.

    The focus of my career has been to improve patients knowledge of their disease. To this end I began the Path.Finder consortium where we shared information for patients between primary and secondary care and also made information directly to patients. This project was taken up by 14 UK Trusts. I now edit the very popular booklets produced by the ARC.

    In 2004 I was appointed Consultant in Acute Medicine and Rheumatology at the Royal Liverpool & Broadgreen University Hospital. I was appointed Sub-clinical Dean for the undergraduate students and in 2007 was appointed Director of Clinical Studies for Liverpool University School of Medical Education, where I am responsible for the clinical undergraduate training programme.
    Personal profile:
    Supporting my family is the most important aspect of my life. I have 4 children, 2 now grown up, one in Medical IT and one a key stage one teacher. My younger daughters aged 17 and 15 keep me very active with horse riding, squash, tennis, unsuccessful fishing, swimming, cycling and sailing. In 1999 with my son, then aged 18, we cycled 279 miles in China for Mencap and I have continued to regularly cycle, recently clocking up over 3000 miles.
