Virtual consultations:
I was appointed as a Consultant Surgeon in Southend in 2005 with a special interest in hip and knee replacement, sports injuries and arthroscopic (keyhole) surgery. I have been instrumental in developing services at Southend and introducing new techniques such as minimally invasive ligament repairs and reconstruction, joint replacements in younger patients and customised knee replacements. In 2015, I became Southend Hospital Trauma and Orthopaedics Clinical Lead which is a role where I act as a voice for my patients and colleagues to continue to meet the ongoing challenges of the NHS. I have extensive experience of treating injuries affecting bones, joints, ligaments, tendons and muscles across the body.
I have long experience of hip and knee replacements, as well as keyhole/minimally invasive operations on the knee such as cartilage and ligament repair and reconstruction. As a result, I carry out significantly more hip and knee replacement surgeries each year than the national average surgeon. Much of my practice involves more complex and challenging operations, such as revision replacement, so I have a wide spectrum of skills to deal with most eventualities and challenges.
Procedures I carry out include hip replacement, revision hip replacement, knee replacement (including partial/unicompartmental), revision knee replacement, knee arthroscopy/keyhole surgery (cartilage/meniscal problems, cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACL), kneecap/patella stabilisation), autologous chondrocyte implantation, Matrix-induced chondrocyte implantation (MACI), hamstring repair, amputations, arthroplasty, chondroplasty, soft tissue injuries and fractures.
I keep up with modern techniques while not jumping on any bandwagons unless they have proven themselves first. This is to ensure that I am able to do the very best for my patients and above all, avoid exposing them to harm. In recent years I have trained and become experienced in robotic assisted knee replacements and believe this will be the future of surgery. I have also trained in modern cartilage regeneration and ligament reconstruction techniques.
Although I am a surgeon at heart, I try to avoid going straight to the operating theatre unless it is absolutely necessary, and unless other options have been exhausted. Most importantly, it must be the patients' choice and shared decision making is at the centre of my practice. Orthopaedic surgery is a rewarding profession as it can help relieve people of their pain and improve their mobility.
