Mr Loughead obtained his medical degree from Newcastle University. Post-graduate Orthopaedic training was completed in the northern region.

Mr Loughead underwent additional surgical training in London, Ontarion in complex hip and knee replacement and revision. In Canada he also trained in the management of early adult hip problems and hip arthroscopy.
