Background Information
Professional profile:
I completed my basic surgical training in Scotland. From July 1996 until February 2002 I worked in Wales as specialist registrar in both general and vascular surgery. I then spent a year as a fellow in vascular and transplant surgery at the Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane, Australia and lecturer in vascular surgery at the University of Queensland.

On return from Australia I resumed my post as specialist registrar in vascular surgery at Morriston Hospital in Swansea before my recent appointment as consulting surgeon in vascular and general surgery at the University Hospital of North Durham.

I currently have a busy general and vascular surgical practice.

On the general side I routinely perform laparoscopic cholecystectomy and manage patients with gallbladder disease. I also perform hernia surgery and excision of skin lesions, lumps and bumps, etc.

I am currently the lead in thyroid surgery in the University Hospital of North Durham with a large thyroid practice including diagnostic work, regular operating with pre and post op care involving our multi disciplinary team in management when appropriate.

From a vascular point of view I regularly see patients with transient ischaemic attacks (TIA's) and patients who have recovered from strokes and treat them when appropriate with carotid endarterectomy. I also perform repair of abdominal aortic aneurysms and investigate and treat patients with intermittent claudication and critical ischaemia. I am interested in the treatment of both primary and recurrent varicose veins and in the treatment of varicose ulcers. I also offer the VNUS procedure for varicose veins.
