Meet the weight loss surgery team

At Spire Southampton Hospital our multi-disciplinary weight loss surgery team will provide specialist advice and support to patients from Southampton, Hampshire and beyond.  

Mr Michael Van den Bossche, Consultant General Surgeon

Mr Michael Van Den Bossche, Consultant General SurgeonMr Vanden Bossche, MD, FRCS (Gen) has been working as a Consultant General and Laparoscopic Surgeon at the Princess Elisabeth Hospital in Guernsey for 10 years. He started doing obesity surgery in 1995 in Belgium and has given obesity surgery training to surgeons in several hospitals in the UK. Mr Van den Bossche has given lectures and live surgery demonstrations in several countries. Mr Van den Bossche is also a faculty member at the European Surgical Institute In Hamburg, Germany. His main interest is in laparoscopic surgery and each year he performs over 200 laparoscopic bariatric procedures.

Mr Ian Bailey, Consultant General Surgeon

Mr Ian Bailey, MS, FRCS, Consultant General Surgeon, specialises in laparoscopic surgery. He introduced the weight-loss surgery team at Spire Southampton Hospital.

Mr James Byrne, Consultant General Surgeon

Mr James Byrne is a specialist laparoscopic and upper gastrointestinal surgeon and Honorary Senior Lecturer, and was appointed Consultant Surgeon at Southampton University Hospitals NHS trust in 2002. He trained in laparoscopic and bariatric surgery in Manchester and Brisbane, Australia.

He has been a member of the bariatric surgical team in Southampton since its inception in April 2004. The strong team in Southampton benefits from close involvement of specialist dietician, nurses and anaesthesia throughout. Working as a team ensures that patients select the most appropriate procedure. It also significantly reduces operative risk, and helps patients to achieve the best possible outcome after surgery. Our team has now performed over 500 bariatric procedures with no mortality.

He offers the following procedures: Gastric banding, Sleeve gastrectomy, RNY gastric bypass, and revision surgery for those who have previously had gastric banding or other procedures.

Mr Jamie Kelly, Consultant General Surgeon

Mr Jamie Kelly, BM, BSc (Hons), FRCS, is a consultant general surgeon at Southampton University Hospitals NHS Trust. He first qualified in 1995 and has a specialist interest in laparascopic or minimal access surgery.

Mr Kelly is part of the weight loss surgery team at Spire Southampton Hospital.

Rhoda Sutherland, Dietitian

Rhoda Sutherland has worked as a hospital dietitian for many years. In particular she has focused on acute care nutrition and research in malnutrition. She has specialised in weight-loss surgery for the last six years.

Rhoda works with Mr Van den Bossche, Mr Bailey and Mr Byrne, and runs the pre assessment and patient follow up programmes in close liaison both consultants. Her special interest is weight management, and advice focuses on nutrition, metabolism and exercise, following bariatric surgery dietary management following a nutritionally adequate and balanced programme us essential.

Rhoda trained in Aberdeen and is a member of the British Dietetic Association, Health Professionals council, Dietitians in Obesity Management UK and British Association of Parenteral and Enteral nutrition.
