    Background Information
    Professional profile:
Mr. Simon Payne qualified from Leicester University Medical School in 1986, and trained in Vascular and General Surgery in Oxford, Sydney, Leicester and Newcastle-upon-Tyne. His research into colour duplex scanning in venous disease and varicose veins led to his MD thesis. He has published and presented over thirty research papers on Vascular Surgery - the majority being on venous disease. Mr. Payne was appointed Consultant Vascular and General Surgeon to Portsmouth Hospitals in 1998 at the age of 34.

Mr. Payne's particular interests within vascular surgery are venous disease (ranging from thread vein treatment through to managing venous ulcers) and carotid surgery for stroke prevention. He pioneered awake carotid artery surgery locally and leads a team of Vascular Surgeons and Anaesthetists who have achieved world class results at Portsmouth Hospitals. Mr. Payne is one of nine venous specialists on Spire Healthcares' national advisory panel for treatment of varicose veins and a board member of the British Association of Sclerotherapists (bassclerotherapy.com).

Outside Vascular conditions, Mr. Payne performs surgery for hernias and other minor surgical conditions. He has also developed an interest in the treatment of excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis) including injection therapy. He sits on the national advisory panel for the management of hyperhidrosis, which publishes the Guidelines advice books for medical colleagues.

    Personal profile:
Mr. Payne grew up on the south coast, in the heart of the New Forest and now lives in Fareham. Outside Surgery he nurtures his childrens' interests in sailing horse riding and dance. When time permits, he indulges his own passions of playing the piano and sailing the Solent and south coast on 'La Mouette'.
