I qualified at the Charing Cross Hospital Medical School, University of London in 1971 and then trained in the UK and USA.
I was a Lecturer in Surgery at Harvard (Massachusetts General Hospital), Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the University of Oxford. I have held both MRC and CRC grants and fellowships. I have worked for both Sir Hans Krebs FRS and Professor Peter Morris FRS in the UK, and Prof J F Burke FRACS in the USA.
I was appointed as a Senior Lecturer in Southampton in 1983 with interests in General and Cancer Surgery. In 1988 I was appointed as an NHS Consultant General Surgeon with a Specialist interest in Breast Surgery to the Southampton and Salisbury Breast Screening Unit. My main clinical interests are: breast disease, endocrine eg thyroid and parathyroid, hernias and soft tissue (lumps and bumps). My current research interest includes the management of screen detected breast cancer and the management of thyroid lesions. Southampton is a national centre for both of these conditions.
Since 2007 I have undertaken clinics and operating lists on the Isle of Wight.
I am the lead Clinician for Breast and Thyroid for Southampton University Hospitals.
