You may feel your nose is too big, small, narrow or wide, or maybe is crooked or has a bump in it - nose re-shaping surgery can change all of these.

Our experienced consultants will talk to you in detail about how you want to change your nose shape and advise you on what it is possible to achieve.

Our focus is on creating as natural and ‘un-operated’ appearance as possible for you, in keeping with the proportions of your face and ensuring that that the function of your nose is maintained or even improved by the surgery.

What to expect

Having the procedure at the Portsmouth Cosmetic Clinic means you will be seen by an experienced cosmetic surgeon of your choice who will discuss your options and the best course of treatment for you. The same consultant will perform the operation and provide all of your after-care with the support of a specialist nurse.

Your nose surgery will be carried out under general anaesthetic at the Spire Portsmouth Hospital, so you will be asleep throughout the procedure. You will usually be able to return home the same day, though sometimes you may need to stay in hospital for one or two nights.

If you choose to have the size of your nose reduced (reduction rhinoplasty), cartilage and bone can be removed or rearranged through cuts inside your nostrils to reduce the size, remove a ‘bump’ or straighten your nose. The skin on the outside of your nose is left untouched and shrinks down to the new shape.

If you choose to have the size of your nose increased (augmentation rhinoplasty), the bone is reshaped through cuts inside or between your nostrils. Sometimes extra bone or cartilage is needed to build up the nose, which may be taken from your body. Your consultant will discuss all of the options with you.

After your nose surgery there may be some initial pain and painkillers often help. You will need to have a splint held over your nose by tape for the first seven days, and a pad under your nose for the first twelve hours. There will be bruising and swelling, particularly around your eyes, which can take about three weeks to settle. It will take around three months for all of the swelling in your nose to disappear.

Allow two weeks off work following a nose operation. In terms of exercise, you should be able to walk a distance after three-to-five days, and to swim after three weeks, although strenuous exercise should be avoided for four-to-six weeks.
